It is particularly notable for its expansive depiction of the Mer de L'Ouest, or "Sea of the West," which is illustrated as a vast sea, comparable in size to the Mediterranean, extending from the then known Strait of Juan de Fuca. California is portrayed as an island. The map was published by tienne Andr Philippe de Prtot, a royal censor and
