Gaja Lakshmi or Gajalaxmi means Lakshmi with elephants. She sits atop a lotus throne and symbolises both fertility and abundance whilst being bathed by elephants. Gaja Lakshmi motifs are commonly found in both Hinduism & Buddhism. The style of carving indicates it to be Gujarati in origin. It would have adorned an old haveli, a home of a merchant.
